For adults who have recovered from depression with the help of antidepressant drugs, a combination of slow tapering and psychological support prevents relapse as effectively as remaining on medication, according to a systematic review and network meta-analysis of 76 randomised controlled trials. Relapse rates were substantially higher when antidepressant drugs were stopped abruptly or tapered rapidly.
