Why the GMC should not retain a right of appeal against MPTS decisions

The General Medical Council’s (GMC’s) power to appeal decisions made by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) remains a controversial feature of medical regulation. Although this power is often presented as a safeguard to protect patients, it also raises serious concerns about fairness, proportionality, and the independence of the adjudication process.
