Some of my older patients continue in robust health until very near the end of their long lives, but many are less fortunate. As the years pass they acquire more conditions, along with more medicines to treat them, and their mobility declines. Some of these patients continue to visit the surgery, brought by friends or relatives, but some become housebound, leaving only in emergencies or when an ambulance takes them to hospital. These are the patients most in need of our attention as GPs, but in many cases they receive less and less of it.12
