John James Jones, known as JJ or Taff, was, despite being born in Bristol, a proud Welshman. He was raised in Mid Wales by his father, an aircraft draughtsman, and his mother, a midwife. He attended Aberdare grammar school before medical studies at Bristol University, where he met his wife, Hazel. They married in 1965 and had three sons.
