It’s hard to think of a time when there was something positive to report about the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC). Ideally, the regulator of a profession should be trusted and respected by that profession. Today’s reality is far from ideal. Doctors have lost confidence in the GMC. But could it be worse? Yes: a new analysis in The BMJ shows that the GMC is being soft on doctors found guilty of sexual assault (doi:10.1136/bmj-2025-086867).1 This criticism applies specifically to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), which acts autonomously from the GMC but is accountable to it.
