Kevin was born on the Isle of Man in 1939 and attended Douglas High School for Boys, where he won the mayor’s prize for leadership. He then studied medicine at Liverpool University medical school from 1957 to 1962. After qualifying he completed house officer, senior house officer, and registrar posts at Liverpool and Warrington infirmaries. He then did the senior registrar orthopaedic rotation in Liverpool. This included an attachment at Wrightington Hospital, where he worked under John Charnley, a pioneer of hip replacement surgery.
