On 13 August 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security. 1 The following day, the WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, marking the second such global alert for mpox in 15 months.2 These declarations followed a rapid increase in cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with geographic spread of the disease to Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.3
