Supermarket-style scanners can track medical devices safely and easily—so why are they not used across the NHS?

A BBC investigation into faulty heart devices in November 2025 highlighted continuing problems in the NHS’s use and tracking of medical implants.1 Readily available technology has the potential to revolutionise the way we identify and recall faulty devices, but it is not being rolled out quickly enough across the NHS.
