Fred was born in Beeston, Nottingham, and attended Henry Mellish grammar school before training at Guy’s Hospital, qualifying in 1964. Following posts in Nottingham he joined the Royal Navy and had several postings, including to Singapore. On discharge from the navy he trained in genitourinary medicine, working in Manchester and Leicester before taking up a consultant post in New Zealand. Here he was charged with setting up a specialist service for genitourinary medicine in Auckland.
