In March, the UK Home Office announced an “emergency brake” on student visas for Sudanese nationals, citing widespread abuse and the risk of subsequent asylum claims.1 Three years of conflict has devastated Sudan’s health system and reconstructing it depends on qualified staff, many of whom have no choice but to train abroad. The UK should be supporting efforts to rebuild healthcare in Sudan, not blocking its future doctors and scientists from educational opportunities.
