Words have the power to harm or heal, and there has been recent interest in the influence that choice of language has on patient care and experience. The use of person-centered language in medicine, separating an individual’s identity from their medical history, can produce positive effects by decreasing stigma and building trust. 1 2 An example is describing a patient as a “person with substance use disorder” rather than a “drug addict.”3
