Impetigo is a common and highly contagious superficial infection of the epidermis of the skin that predominantly affects children, although it can occur at any age. It most commonly presents as erythematous plaques with a yellow crust and can be itchy and/or painful. Annual UK incidence is estimated to be 2.8% of children under 4 years of age and 1.6% of children aged 5–15 years. It can be divided into non-bullous and bullous types, with the former representing 70%–80% of cases, most often caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes organisms. A deep ulcerated infection known as ecthyma may occur as a complication of bullous impetigo.1
