Kim et al 1 provide rigorous quasi-experimental evidence that Korea’s 2014 Basic Pension expansion was associated with sustained reductions in suicide mortality among older women. Their work advances the global debate on whether unremarkable pensions can function as population-level suicide prevention. We wish to extend their findings by situating Korea within a broader comparative context and by highlighting methodological considerations.
