Advances in endoscopic imaging and the development of standardised classification systems, such as the Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) International Colorectal Endoscopic classification, have enabled reliable optical diagnosis of colorectal polyps. Careful assessment of polyp colour, vascular architecture and surface patterns allows endoscopists to characterise polyp histology and identify lesions requiring resection with a high degree of confidence.
