Introduction Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is recognised as the third most common cause of vascular related mortality costing approximately €8.5 billion in the European Union. Lower limb immobilisation is a transient but provoking factor of deep vein thrombosis with the incidence ranging from 4.3% to 40% among those immobilised for one week or more. However, in Ireland, unlike other countries, there is currently no recommended VTE risk assessment model (RAM) used in the emergency care setting.Methods A systematic review following the Johanna Briggs Institute guidelines was conducted to identify and evaluate studies of VTE RAMS used to assess the risk of VTE among adults with lower limb immobilisation in the emergency care setting. A search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant articles using predefined search criteria with articles screened for inclusion against eligibility criteria. The quality of studies was assessed using the MMAT and AMSTAR 2 with risk of bias assessed using PROBAST. Data were extracted using data extraction tables and a narrative synthesis was conducted.Results From 493 papers identified from the database search, six were included in the review with a combined total sample of 7028 participants. Five of the studies demonstrated good methodological quality with an unclear or high risk of bias identified in four of the studies. Overall, the TRiP (cast) score was assessed as the RAM with the most robust development and testing among the RAMs included in this review.Conclusion While it is possible that the TRiP (cast) score would benefit from further development and testing, it should be considered as a suitable tool to support clinicians in identifying the VTE risk in this patient cohort. *presenting author
