Carol Kirkpatrick (née Gladstone) was born in 1941 in Bishop’s Stortford and was educated at the Hertfordshire and Essex High School. She qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1964 when female medical students were a rarity, enjoying success on the hockey field as well as in the classroom. She married David, a scientific civil servant, in 1965 and took early jobs in general practice and family planning while her children were small. She trained part time in radiology under the married women’s retainer scheme.
