Adolescence is a time of particular challenge in an individual’s life with a combination of patterns of brain development and the demands of the social world around them, creating a unique situation of risk to their health and well-being. Across the world, there have been huge advances in the prevention of death from infectious disease and long-term conditions, but the same improvements have not been seen in ‘external’ non-medical causes such as road traffic collisions, suicide and murder/homicide. 1
