Background Advanced practice has gained momentum over recent years as Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) demonstrate their impact and value across healthcare settings, including hospices. In 2024, ACPs from across North West hospices identified the need for a regional lead to help address variations in advanced practice governance arrangements and strengthen opportunities. Hospice ACPs felt the need to align themselves with peers in the NHS through consistent and robust governance frameworks (NHS England. Governance Maturity Matrix: Governance of advanced practice. In addition, they wished to help senior hospice leaders understand the possibilities for the role to enable them to practice to their fullest potential.Aim To pilot an Advanced Practice Lead role for a regional hospice collaborative.Method A charitable funding bid was successful to enable a practising ACP to take up the Lead role on a part time, fixed-term 18 month secondment.Results After nine months, the initial activity and impact has been:Development of a hospice ACP database for the North West region – connecting each other and ensuring an inclusive approach to opportunities.Governance benchmarking of North West hospices with action planning.Networking and collaboration with the NHS Integrated Care System Advanced Practice Leads.Engagement with NHS England’s North West Faculty for Advancing Practice.Presentation at national advancing practice conference.Delivery of an ACP supervisors event.Collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire to develop a virtual Advanced Practice hub.Quarterly newsletters to disseminate the value and impact of the role.Conclusion The pilot of an Advanced Practice Lead role for a regional hospice collaborative is already demonstrating tangible benefits at practitioner, organisation, system and regional level. The current focus is to continue this fantastic work alongside seeking funding opportunities to extend the life of the role.
