Introduction Nuclear cardiology features in the 2016 and 2022 JRCPTB Cardiology Curricula, yet has consistently been rated the most difficult curriculum area to access by respondents to the British Junior Cardiovascular Society’s trainee survey over the past three years. While three lecture-based Level 1 courses exist, none include a hospital-based component. Under the auspices of the British Nuclear Cardiology Society, we implemented a hospital-based nuclear cardiology taster week to address this deficit.Methods Level 1 learning outcomes and a timetable were developed. The taster week was advertised via training programme directors and the BJCA newsletter. It comprised five days of supervised observation of SPECT and PET acquisition and reporting across the Royal Free, St Bartholomew’s, and King’s College Hospitals, London. Of 20 expressions of interest, cardiology trainees available for the full week were accepted. All completed post-week Likert-scale feedback (1–5).Results Six trainees attended (3 female; 5 using study leave). Of 30 potential trainee-days, 5.5 were missed due to unforeseen trainee- and departmental-related factors. Daily feedback was consistently high (means 4.5–4.8/5). Primary modalities included myocardial perfusion, 99mTc-DPD, FDG, and hybrid PET/CT imaging. Trainees rated improved understanding (4.6/5), inspiration to learn more (4.5/5), and career consideration (3.8/5). The overall experience rating was 4.6/5 (figures 1–4).Conclusion We report the first UK-wide - and to our knowledge first international - hospital-based nuclear cardiology taster week for cardiology trainees. Following this successful pilot, we plan an expanded programme next academic year and encourage UK and international adoption of similar initiatives.
