Girish Chandra was born in the town of Balrampur, in Uttar Pradesh, India. His family lived in relative poverty and he won a scholarship to study medicine at King George’s Medical College in Lucknow. He was introduced to ophthalmology in his fourth year and once completed 160 cataract surgeries in two days at a medical camp. His passion for ophthalmology infused him for life.
