We gathered to discuss the DexEnceph trial, a phase 3 randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating adjunctive intravenous dexamethasone (10 mg four times per day for 4 days) in adults with herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSE), confirmed by PCR and receiving standard-of-care aciclovir.1 Given the substantial morbidity of HSE and the longstanding uncertainty around corticosteroids,2 we felt this study could potentially inform clinical practice.
