I am old enough to remember the time before clinical audits. When I started as a general orthopaedic consultant in 2002, a co-worker quipped that “no one will check your homework.” Soon after that, we began analysing outcomes more consistently and discussing how to reduce the risk of complications in future patients.1 We started having occasional audit meetings at lunchtime. Since then, clinical governance has become mandatory, with meetings every two months.
