Background A survey of employee experience of discrimination at work was undertaken in 2023. 26% of respondents had experienced or witnessed discrimination; most incidents were of a racist nature. An action plan was developed and implemented in response.Aim To ensure our hospice has an inclusive and anti-racist culture.Method An anonymous survey identified experiences of discrimination at work. Key themes were analysed and action areas developed. These were prioritised at an extended leadership workshop. An anti-discrimination action plan was developed and implemented by our anti-racism group. During 2024, we:Introduced a Patient and Visitor Behaviour Policy and Procedures leaflet.Introduced ‘It’s Not Micro’ based on training originally developed by Race Equality Matters (What is #ItsNotMicro? Race Equality Matters. [internet]).Developed guidelines to help colleagues challenge discrimination and microaggressions.Continued monthly Inclusion talks and launched Privilege Walks.Promoted ways to raise concerns, launched a whistleblowing line, and recruited an additional Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, with lived experience of racism.Launched our public commitment to being an anti-racist organisation (https://www.pah.org.uk/about/what-we-do/our-anti-racism-statement/), developed with colleagues, including those with lived experience.Participated in Race Equality Week in 2024 and 2025.Launched a podcast series ‘Belonging and Beyond’, with Episode 1 exploring ‘Does racism still exist?’Results Since its November 2024 launch, 23% of employees have completed ‘It’s Not Micro’. 38 Inclusion Talks have been held (including ‘What is ethnicity’, ’Racial trauma’ and ‘Caring for my Jewish family’). 48 colleagues have joined Privilege Walks. In our last employee engagement survey, 90% agreed they are comfortable being themselves at work and 85% agreed the hospice acted fairly in its dealings with everyone (regardless of all protected characteristics, including ethnicity). Conclusion We have developed a targeted approach and made a public commitment to be an anti-racist organisation. Becoming a truly anti-racist organisation is our ongoing goal.
