Zelig Eshhar, PhD, Fellow of the Academy of Immuno-Oncology (FAIO), passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 84. His passing is deeply personal to all of us and for the entire field of cancer immunotherapy. Professor Eshhar was one of the foundational immunologists for the concept of treating diseases with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) redirected T cells, a technology that became a breakthrough in the treatment of cancer. His work and that of those who followed underscores the power of the immune system to control cancer, autoimmune diseases and potentially other diseases, giving hope to numerous patients around the world.
