Mortality and hospital admissions due to liver disease are increasing globally. 1–4 Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of organ dysfunction and death5 following hepatic decompensation.6 7 Unscheduled hospital admissions have high mortality and readmission rates.8 Ascites and encephalopathy can become chronic, and progressive sarcopenia and frailty contribute to the high support needs and carer burden.9 10
