Beyond readmission: prioritising patient-centred, clinically relevant outcomes in studies of complex interventions for patients with cirrhosis

Mortality and hospital admissions due to liver disease are increasing globally. 1–4 Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of organ dysfunction and death5 following hepatic decompensation.6 7 Unscheduled hospital admissions have high mortality and readmission rates.8 Ascites and encephalopathy can become chronic, and progressive sarcopenia and frailty contribute to the high support needs and carer burden.9 10
