Background Wirral Hospice St John’s Wellbeing Centre has an established programme of education sessions. However, this didn’t align with symptoms experienced by patients with progressive neurological conditions. A project was launched to understand the need and develop a supportive education programme for this patient group.Aims To develop sessions where information, advice, and strategies to aid symptom management intending to reduce the impact of illness are shared, improving: patient and carer confidence in self-managing the condition, and quality of life at any stage of their illness. Methods An eight-week programme was designed by a multidisciplinary team and included:Education sessions focusing on information and management strategies for a variety of symptoms.Gentle movement/exercise.Relaxation or mindfulness techniques.Carers groups.Participants completed the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) before and after the course. Patients and carers were also asked to complete a post-course questionnaire, commenting on:Confidence in managing their condition pre- and post- course.Relevance of course content. If there was anything not covered that they would suggest including. If there was anything they felt did not need to be in the programme. Results Two groups have completed the programme with consistently positive feedback from patients and carers. Content and structure were rated as relevant and helpful. Confidence in managing conditions increased post group. Average IPOS scores dropped indicating an improvement in outcome. Conclusion Due to the positive results and the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received from each group run, we feel the programme has been a success. We plan to continue running the programme on a quarterly basis, conducting follow-up assessments to gauge ongoing needs and prepare for future groups.
