The hypothalamus temperature control centre is innervated by kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin (KNDy) neurons that are normally inhibited by oestrogen and stimulated by a protein called NK B, predominantly acting via the NK3 receptor. 1 2 Before the menopause, the balance between oestrogen hormones and NK B regulates this temperature control centre, but, as oestrogen levels fall during menopause, this balance is disrupted, which can lead to VMS (hot flushes or night sweats).1–4 Based on over 1.4 million women from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD database, which captured data from UK primary care practices, the prevalence of VMS in the UK has been reported as 21.1% and the incidence as 15.3 per 1000 person-years.5
