In the JNNP paper by Bellampalli et al, the authors ask a timely and underexplored question: can inherited genetic variation determine who is biologically most vulnerable to rising ambient temperatures? By systematically identifying human genetic variants whose functional consequences depend on temperature, termed calortypic variants, they introduce a framework linking climate change to individual-level genetic susceptibility, with a particular focus on neurological disease.1
