Pathology and laboratory medicine encompasses 17 specialties undertaking blood and tissue based analyses to accurately diagnose and monitor conditions including cancers, metabolic diseases, blood disorders, immunological diseases, genetic conditions, and infections. Given that 95% of clinical decisions and pathways are based on laboratory testing,1 attention to laboratory medicine is essential to deliver the “three shifts” in healthcare outlined in the NHS 10 year plan—from hospital to community, analogue to digital, and sickness to prevention.234
