Charles Price was steeped in public health from an early age. He was born in Sheffield in 1956 and grew up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, just down the road from the headquarters of the National Union of Mineworkers. A large proportion of the town’s population worked in the pits, and the area had some of the worst health outcomes in the country. His mother, Althea, was a GP at a time when women doctors were a rarity, and his father, Evan, was for some years the only orthopaedic surgeon in the town. His surgical list was dominated by patients who had been injured in the mines.
