Over 10 million people with epilepsy qualify as surgical candidates worldwide, with 1.4 million new potential surgical candidates added each year.1 The actual number of epilepsy surgeries performed worldwide is disproportionately small. In the UK, about 450 people with epilepsy proceed to surgery each year.2 For these people, surgery offers the prospect of long-term seizure remission in 60%–80% compared with a <5% chance of achieving any duration of seizure remission with additional ASM trials. In addition, it translates to better quality of life and the prospects of independent living and social assimilation postsurgery.
