A 59-year-old man presented to the emergency department with mild left lower leg pain and numbness. The symptoms began after a fishing competition during which he had been wearing a knee brace. He had a history of chronic left knee pain that had been treated with local injections. The clinical appearance of his lower limbs on presentation is shown ( figure 1).
