Walking remains one of the recommendations for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Across disease severities, greater physical activity is associated generally with improved quality of life, fewer hospitalisations and lower mortality. Yet, an increasingly important question has emerged in parallel with urbanisation and growing concern about traffic-related pollution: can the environments in which patients exercise partially offset the benefits of activity itself?1–3
