Background East Lancashire Hospice serves a diverse community, with 39% identifying as Muslim. Yet, under 5% of Muslims access hospice services. Since 2015, the hospice’s Ramadan campaign has aimed to build trust, raise awareness, and improve access to all services. Inspired by hospice supporter, Suleman Khonat – whose wife received hospice care in 2014 – the campaign focuses on meaningful engagement rather than just fundraising. As a Muslim Hospice Ambassador, Suleman plays a vital role in breaking down cultural barriers.Aims Raise awareness of hospice care within Muslim communities.Promote culturally respectful, inclusive care.Increase Muslim community access to hospice services.Encourage giving during Ramadan.Strengthen cultural awareness among staff. Methods Community outreach was central, with partnerships formed with mosques and community leaders. Suleman’s personal story fostered emotional trust. Social media and video messages profiled Muslim staff sharing their faith and role at the hospice. Media coverage featured Iftar events and highlighted local giving – featured on ‘Granada Reports’. The fundraising team received training on Islamic traditions, including religious practices. Respect for cultural norms included avoiding faces on mosque posters. Accessible giving options included online platforms, QR codes, and mosque collection partnerships. Results More than £92,000 has been raised over ten years. Trust and engagement within Muslim communities have grown, as has the diversity and cultural competence of the workforce. Yearly donations vary due to Islamic guidance to prioritise disaster relief when needed. Ambassadors have been instrumental in community representation and outreach. Iftar events held at the hospice have strengthened relationships and showcased the impact of support. This campaign shows that Ramadan is about more than giving – it’s about connecting faith and care. A diverse, culturally aware workforce ensures Muslim patients feel understood and respected.
