Discussing death and dying within Australian First Nations communities is often avoided and, in some communities, considered taboo. This impacts on the lack of advance care conversations, resulting in low uptake and completion numbers of advance care directives and sharing wishes more generally.The ‘we need to know before you go’ teabag resource has been developed for Australian First Nations communities as a culturally safe tool to initiate Advance Care Yarns and conversations on planning ahead for Sad News and Sorry Business. ‘Come on, let’s have a cuppa and a yarn, cause we need to know before you go’.Developed in collaboration between Ngiyani Wandabaa, Advance Care Planning Australia, the Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education – Queensland and the Gwandalan National Palliative Care Project, the resource includes teabag pouches and questions to initiate yarning. Containing a total of 8 questions, one question relating directly to advance care planning includes, ‘Who would you want to speak for you if you couldn’t speak for yourself?’. Resource also includes a booklet, allowing for wishes to be documented.Resource is aimed to be used by First Nations peoples in community (amongst family and friends) and by non-Indigenous professionals to support culturally sensitive and respectful advance care yarning. By supporting individuals and families to engage in early conversations using culturally safe tools provides an educational opportunity for professionals to share knowledges of advance care planning processes and dispel surrounding myths, allowing for First Nations individuals to make informed choices regarding future health care.
