Fred Marriott was born in Blackpool in 1929. After a scholarship to Arnold School he studied medicine at Edinburgh University. These were the post-war years, and he cycled between Blackpool and Edinburgh between terms, taking a day or two for each trip. He developed a lifelong fondness for Scotland, living and working in Edinburgh and Dunfermline long after graduation.
