It is an important question … Does paracetamol use during pregnancy increase children’s risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism? Ahlqvist VH, et al (JAMA 2024;331(14):1205–1214. doi:10.1001/jama.2024.3172) have examined the associations of paracetamol use during pregnancy with children’s risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and intellectual disability. It is a Swedish, nationwide population cohort study of 2 480 797 children born from 1995 to 2019, with follow-up through 31 December 2021. The most important feature of the study design was that they used sibling control analysis. Some previous studies that had not used sibling controls have shown a marginally increased association with ASD and ADHD.
