In 2023, the Italian Medicines Agency approved the reimbursement of emtricitabine/tenofovir (FTC/TDF) for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). A single generic formulation became available. Infectious disease specialists were allowed to prescribe a maximum of three boxes (90 days of coverage). In October 2024, the sole authorised manufacturer announced production issues.
