The National Institute for Health and Care Research’s summary of Stevens et al’s study highlights the features of support that young carers find most meaningful: confidentiality, trust, flexibility, and direct help for the care recipient.12 These insights underline that young carers should be seen not only as “helpers” but as a group at heightened risk of health compromise. Although not every young carer develops health problems, many experience disrupted sleep, stress, and poor mental health as a direct result of their caring responsibilities.345 These needs remain hidden when services focus only on the support they provide, rather than the toll that care may take.
