The first case of AIDS was reported in the UK in 1981, and numbers increased rapidly over the following years. Surveillance of this devastating new disease was vital, and Anna McCormick, an epidemiologist at what was then called the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC), played a key role in plotting the shape of the epidemic: the number of cases and deaths, the likely trajectory, and who was most affected by the disease.
