We are writing in response to the recent publication by McNee et al. entitled ‘Self-reported contraceptive method use at conception among patients presenting for abortion in England: a cross-sectional analysis comparing 2018 and 2023’. 1 This study examined changes in contraceptive use at the time of conception among abortion patients at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), over a 5-year period. The authors suggest that among other factors, the observed increase in abortions is linked to a shift from more effective hormonal methods to fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs), which they characterise as having low effectiveness.
