Electronic healthcare data is a rich source of information which has revolutionised not only patient care, but also the ability to conduct research employing reproducible analytics. However, hospitals may use different coding standards and vocabularies to capture similar medical information which can make it difficult to conduct collaborative research. Through the standardisation of medical data by utilising, for example, the Observations Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM) and the use of a federated data network, it becomes possible for multiple sites to work together for the benefit of patient health.The Paediatric Hospitals as European drivers for multi-party computation and synthetic data generation capabilities across clinical specialities and data types (PHEMS) project involves four paediatric hospitals who have standardised their source data to the OMOP CDM. This allowed for the Data Research Innovation and Virtual Environment (DRIVE) department at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) to develop an interactive RShiny app that shows aggregated, non-identifiable data to benchmark operational management for cardiac patient pathways. As each site has adopted the same data structures, the codebase is able to be shared so each site can explore the data for their site, and enables comparison of cardiac services across Europe, enhancing learning from best practices.The study period spans from May 2019 to February 2025 and includes patients who have records pertaining to a selection of defined cardiac operations. This makes up a GOSH base patient cohort of 3,438 records and relates to 2,617 patients of which the mean age is 3 years old with a 45%/ 55% split of female to male patients. Characterisation of the data highlights key findings relating to 30-day complication rate post cardiac operation, which can be tracked over time, and includes time-to-event information to investigate onset of such complications.Acknowledgements for Funding or Support The PHEMS project is funded by the European Union and UKRI grant number 10074953.
