Stuart was born and brought up in Glasgow and gained scholarships to Glenalmond College in Perthshire and St John’s College, Cambridge. He completed his clinical training at Oxford and subsequently did a senior house officer rotation that included six months in Brussels. He put the fluency in French that he acquired there to good use, translating medical and scientific papers throughout his career.
