P42 Designing lighting to promote better sleep

This paper reviews recent research and guidance to illustrate practical approaches to designing lighting that takes into consideration the impacts of general lighting on timing, duration and depth of sleep, in other words its quality, for the general population.The importance of light to sleep quality has come to the fore through research over the past 15 years on the non-visual effects of light largely through the discovery and understanding of the intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (iPRGC) that are connected to the Supercharismatic nucleus in the brain (figure 1). This research was brought together in a consensus paper by Brown et al in 2022 ‘CONSENSUS VIEW. Recommendations for daytime, evening, and nighttime indoor light exposure to best support physiology, sleep, and wakefulness in healthy adults’This paper sets out specific recommendations that are becoming widely adopted in the lighting field and are beginning to be included in lighting standards. We will demonstrate how this impacts the Lighting Design process and becomes integrated into lighting that has previously been entirely focused on the visual task figure 2).The paper concludes with an application case study demonstrating how this is delivered in the building design processAbstract P42 Figure 1Abstract P42 Figure 2
