The widely predicted collapse of the NHS due to resident doctors’ industrial action just before Christmas didn’t materialise.1 There was little change to the new normal, with too many sick people spending unacceptable hours on trolleys in emergency departments,2 but overcrowding was slightly less bad than last year.3
