David was born in the east end of Glasgow, the son of a Clydeside shipwright. He had wanted to be an engineer as a young boy, but after witnessing the slow and painful death of his young mother from oesophageal carcinoma he decided to study medicine. He entered Glasgow University in 1948, after two years in the Royal Air Force as a navigator completing his national service.
