Some time during the first half of 2009 I went into a meeting about the Education and Practice (E&P) Edition of ADC, often called the Green Journal because of the colour of the cover. The journal had been running for around 5 years, established at the request of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) with the aim of providing continuous professional development to members and subscribers. I had been invited because I had pitched to the editor, Howard Bauchner, an idea for the section ‘Interpretations’, which I had thought of as a rational way of looking at tests, a bit like the way we had begun looking at medication prescriptions. We had had a few papers in this section, and they had been fairly popular. Bob Phillips and I also had a section called ‘Picket’, and as the two of us went into the meeting, I turned to him and said, “Please prevent me from coming out of this meeting with more jobs”. A few hours passed and I emerged, having somehow agreed to become edition editor, a role I then held for the next 12½ years.
