Human organ transplantation is a major advance in medical science. It offers a fresh lease of life to millions suffering from organ failure. Donated organs can be sourced either from brainstem-dead persons or from living donors. Both forms of donation are regulated by a comprehensive Act of Parliament—the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 (THOTA 1994).1
