Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare quality and health outcomes have been empirically documented for over 40 years. 1–4 The role of racism and the need for structural reform were explicitly called out in the seminal 2003 report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care, published by the Institute of Medicine.5
