Owing to low rates of testing, up to two thirds of people at risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) may have albuminuria (albumin excreted in the urine) that is not recognised.12 Testing rates are low in both primary and secondary care settings, despite multinational guidance recommending regular testing for albuminuria as part of risk stratification for patients with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and/or CKD.34 It is also recommended for patients with obesity (a risk factor for CKD) by France’s Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS).5 In this article we offer recommendations on primary care assessment and management of albuminuria in adults with, or at risk of, CKD, informed by the latest global guidelines and clinical trials.
